First Ever EV Road Trip, Will it Work?

Boundary pushing is something we excel at and lets throw comfort zones out the window while we’re at. The crew is going on an Electric Vehicle road trip from our home in Central New York, to Pittsburgh for the annual Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.  The vehicle of choice for this adventure would be the 2019 Kia Niro EV EX Premium, a new to market long range electric vehicle touting 239 miles of EPA rated range.

First hurdle for us is that Pittsburgh is between 400 and 430 miles from home depending on the route chosen. As of now we’re opting for the shorter route with hopes of tolerable charger availability in the locations that best serve our purpose. Be sure to follow along on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for up to the minute happenings.

This Kia Niro variant shouldn’t be confused with the 2018 Niro Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) we reviewed last summer, which you can read about here.

The big plot twist here is that we’re going to attempt to do this entire trip on no cost public level 2 (J1772) and level 3 (CCS DC Fast) chargers. We do have accounts with ChargePoint, EVgo, Electrify America, SemaConnect and AAA in the event that things go wrong. Stay tuned for an update on the adventure, coverage from PVGP and a full review on the 2019 Kia Niro EV next week! A huge thanks to Kia Motors America and DriveShop for facilitating this adventure.
